If you are visiting the city or are about to do so, there are countless places that we would like to recommend, this time it is the turn of La Merced, one of the neighborhoods of our beautiful city. La Merced belongs to the historic center of the city of Oaxaca. Like each neighborhood around it, this one also has its own history and charm. Let’s talk about it.

This site owes its name to the temple that is there, which dates from the early seventeenth century, it is known that the first construction was demolished by tremors. Throughout its history, it has been demolished and rebuilt on different occasions, until now the colony’s highest representative. In the month of November, the celebration of the Virgin of La Merced takes place. It should be noted that this colonial jewel was named a historical monument in December 1933.

In this emblematic place, you can also find its market that receives the same name, it was finished in 1909 and inaugurated in 1910, currently as in its previous years, you can find dining rooms with typical dishes of the state, as well as fruit and vegetable stalls. vegetables, the traditional yellow bread is also sold, among many other foods for the taste of locals and foreigners.

In the surroundings of this neighborhood, you can also visit restaurants and cafes served by the locals, one of them is “Marito & Moglie”, which we recommend you visit during your stay in the city. La Merced is a quiet area close to the best sites in the historic center of Oaxaca. In the same way, you can find just 3 blocks from the Textile Museum of Oaxaca and the San Pablo Cultural Center, both places full of tranquility and art. Also, very close to La Merced is the General Pantheon, which is dressed in cempasúchil flowers, candles, and merriment in the celebration of the Day of the Dead on November 1 and 2. Within these nearby places, we cannot leave out the Casa de la Cultura Oaxaca, which is an institution in charge of the promotion and dissemination of artistic and cultural expressions in Mexico.

Currently, in this neighborhood, a development of 7 apartments, meticulously designed for the comfort of its inhabitants, is under construction. “La Merced” has been designed for those who seek to live in the heart of Oaxaca and be in direct contact with its culture and its people. Living in one of these apartments will allow you to see the daily life of Oaxacans up close and become part of their community. MAGICAL TOWNS OF OAXACA

The April holidays have already arrived and we are here to remind you and always recommend the best places in Oaxaca to visit. At this time of the year, many people opt for beach destinations such as Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, or the city. However, if you prefer a quieter and remote place from the hustle and bustle, let us tell you about the magical towns in our beautiful state.

But, wait, you may be wondering what a magical town is, well, the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico defines it as a place with symbols and legends, populated with a history that in many cases has been the scene of important events for our country, they are places that show the national identity in each of its corners, with a magic that emanates from its attractions; visiting them is an opportunity to discover the charm of Mexico (SECTUR, 2020).

It is important to mention that this program was created by this government institution to contribute to the revaluation of these places that have a lot to share with locals and tourists.

At this moment, 5 towns of Oaxaca have obtained this title, they are:

Huatla de Jimenez:

It was incorporated into the Magical Towns Program in 2015. The word “Huautla” comes from the Nahuatl word and means “place of eagles”.

The main attraction of this locality is the mysticism that surrounds it since it is known by the priestess Maria Sabina and its knowledge about fungi. In addition, this town offers gorgeous views, you can find there scenarios that invite you to meditation and exploration, likewise its mountains, waterfalls, and local food.

Capulalpam de Mendez

It is a magical town since 2007, you can find there everything from beautiful colonial temples to perfect places for climbing, taking quiet walks, and observing the coniferous forests of the Sierra de Juárez. In the artisan workshops of Capulálpam, you will witness the rich tradition of indigenous medicine: the attributes of medicinal plants, their preparation processes, and practical application.

San Pablo Villa de Mitla

This town has the title of magical town since 2015. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word “Mictlan”, which means “resting place”.  It is known because of its archeological zone, which is considered the second most important ceremonial center of Oaxaca. Its indigenous roots and colonial heritage fuse together and create the unique culture of the place.

Mazunte

This gorgeous coastal town joined the category in 2015 too. Mazunte owes its name to a blue crab, very numerous in the area. Its beach belonging has an extension of one kilometer of golden sand, bathed by warm and crystalline waters, with beautiful green and blue tones. In this lovely sanctuary, you will find the Mexican Center of the Turtle, which is an aquarium and a research institution in charge of the preservation of the turtles that live in Mexico. This paradise is an ecologic destination by excellence.

San Pedro and San Pablo Teposcolula

The most attractive site of this colonial town is the former convent of the same name as the town, its open chapel is considered the biggest one in Latin America. On the hill of Pueblo Viejo are the remains of one of the most important Mixtec chiefdoms of the Postclassic. Its cobbled streets and the kindness of the people will definitely make you fall in love with this place. Another must-see is the House of the Cacica, it is a palace that dates back to 1560 and served as the residence of the last Mixtec queen of the Teposcolula domain. The property stands out in the historical panorama of America for being one of the few buildings in the hemisphere in which a clear transition from indigenous construction traditions to techniques brought by Europeans can be seen.

Whichever place you choose to visit these days, we hope you enjoy the amazing treasures Oaxaca has to show you. Either beach, city, or town, we assure you your stay will be unforgettable. Remember Oaxaca awaits you with delicious food, peerless scenes, and the sympathy and hospitality that characterize its people.

WHAT IS THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT MANIFESTATION AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

In a previous article, we explained the different construction services that we offer at SilMexico if your purpose is to carry out a development project. Among them was mentioned the EIM; Environmental Impact Manifestation. Next, we will tell you what it consists of and its importance.

As human beings, we are used to innovating and to do changes in our surroundings, which should be always thought of as not affecting or affecting as little as possible the environment and its living things such as animals, plants, and the people who live there. That is why, with the purpose of preserving the most possible natural resources, in Mexico, the PROFEPA, which is the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection has created mechanisms to regulate the activities done by man and their impact on the environment.

In Mexico, the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection (LGEEPA) DEFINES ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT as the “modification of the environment caused by the action of man and nature”. To estimate the modifications to the environment caused by infrastructure projects, there is an instrument called Environmental Impact Assessment, through which the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) evaluates the impact that works or construction will have on the environment (GOB.MX, 2019).

The EIM is a tool of the environmental policy whose object is to prevent, decrease and restore the affectations on the environment, as well as the regulation of works or activities to avoid or reduce the negative effects on the natural environment and on the humans’ health.

It consists of a technical and scientific study that indicates the effects that a work or activity can generate on nature and points out the preventive measures that could minimize the negative effects produced by the execution of developments. This study allows evaluation of environmental feasibility for the execution, manufacturing, commercial, or service investment projects.

It details the condition of the place prior to the start of the project in order to have a comparison of what was the impact or changes that occurred on the environment after carrying out the construction, and likewise, proposes strategies to reduce or prevent damage already caused or possible future alterations.

The EIM should be presented to the SEMARNAT for its evaluation and authorization. Once authorized, the PROFEPA will be in charge of verifying that the established terms and conditions are accomplished.

That is the reason why, every time it is necessary to carry out projects that are kind to the environment, a key step in human evolution is sustainable construction and development.
